Would You Buy a Screw Cap Bottle of Wine: Corked Wine Vs Screw Cap Wine

Perception is everything. When I buy a bottle of wine, I love the ritual of opening the wine with my corkscrew. The popping sound upon uncorking the wine is music to my ears. I am one of those consumers that will not buy a bottle of wine that has a screw top.

It takes away the luxury feel of the occasion, whether I’m drinking it to unwind for the evening or at a gathering I’m giving. Now-a-days I know there are quality wines out there with screw caps but I leave it on the shelf. Screw cap wines gives the perception of a cheap wine. I liken it to wine in a box. I want a quality bottle of Merlot that is corked. I don’t mean to come across as a snob, but why alienate wine buyers who feel this way?

Why The Trend Towards Screw Cap Wines

1. To preserve the wine after opening.

2. Corks are more expensive.

3. Synthetic corks could possibly taint the wine.

4. Natural corks are becoming a rare commodity.

Sixty one percent of American wine consumers prefer corked wines as opposed to screw top wines. It’s clear the top reason is aesthetics and the specialness of how it makes you feel when opening the wine.Top wine brands are trending towards screw caps for their wines citing the preserving of taste. They are also marketing to a younger demographic who are not as traditional as baby boomers. This is really sad to hear because some traditions as simple as a wine cork should be preserved.
